"We're the only place in America that could qualify to have the Super Bowl or the NCAA Final Four, but when you get out of an airplane, you can't get on metro transit to get to the arena or the event."

John Hertel, incoming CEO of the Regional Transit Authority

Studies have shown that for every dollar spent on mass transit, the private sector invests six dollars, creating new jobs. The incoming C-E-O of the Regional Transit Authority for Southeast Michigan, John Hertel, says new transit projects have also improved property values in Minneapolis, Portland, and Phoenix. WDET’s Pat Batcheller had a conversation with Hertel, who is the General Manager of the SMART bus system. Hertel says the RTA will allow Metro Detroit to catch up to other cities that have modern regional transportation systems. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
