Oh, To Be Young! Youth Day Returns To Belle Isle

July 16, 2013

"Education is key. They have to remember to go to school, to be the best students they can be, go on to college, graduate, get your degree, and come on back to Detroit and be our future leaders."

Ed Deeb, Chairman and Co-Founder of Metro Detroit Youth Day.

Thousands of young Metro Detroiters will take over Belle Isle on Wednesday, July 17, for the annual Youth Day celebration. It’s become one of the area’s signature fun summer events for kids, but it had a somber beginning. A series of deadly confrontations between young people and merchants in Northwest Detroit in 1980 led to a fateful meeting between business and community leaders and Mayor Coleman Young. Metro Detroit Youth Day Chairman and co-founder Ed Deeb recalled that moment for WDET’s Pat Batcheller. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
