"There's a good chance somebody will probably blow over backwards trying to win this thing."

Mark Weber, event organizer for the APBA Gold Cup races on the Detroit River.

One of the oldest sporting events in the nation returns to the Detroit River this weekend. The American Power Boat Association and the Detroit Yacht Club will host the annual Gold Cup races featuring unlimited hydroplanes skimming across the water at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. Detroit has hosted the Gold Cup for 98 years, and the A-P-B-A just signed an agreement to keep the races here for 10 more years. Event organizer Mark Weber tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller the deal preserves Detroit’s place as a power-sports powerhouse. Click on the audio links above to hear more.
