Detroit Officials Formally Break Ground For NW Detroit Meijer

Monday, June 30, 2014

Detroit officials gathered at the corner of Six Mile and Grand River Monday to formally break ground on a new retail development. Grand Rapids-based Meijer is building a new superstore on the site. Mayor Mike Duggan says success of the company’s first Detroit store at Eight Mile and Woodward will serve as a model for the new location.

“If you look at that site today…everybody in that part of Detroit shops at the Meijer…including a lot of people from the suburbs who come into the city and create jobs for Detroiters. Now we have one two miles inside the city boundary…I think it’s going to have even more of an impact. I think it’s going to be very successful.”

Officials say the new store will create about 500 jobs. Construction is expected to take about a year to complete.
