Pastors Fight Blight By Adopting Parks

Thursday, April 24, 2014

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan unveiled a plan last week to better maintain the city’s parks. Under the plan, churches, businesses, and community groups will take care of roughly 65 parks -- cutting the grass and picking up trash. The city will maintain nearly 180 other Detroit parks.

The city’s financial problems left many parks unusable for kids last summer and made many neighborhoods look worse.

Doctor Robert Brumfield is the Pastor of Oak Grove AME Church in northwest Detroit. He started talking with city officials years ago about taking care of Joe Louis Park.

Brumfield spoke with WDET’s Jerome Vaughn.
