There are roughly ten thousand Iraqi refugees in metro Detroit. Thousands came after Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in the 1990’s. Thousand more came after the Iraq war, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Iraqi’s have resettled here becoming part of the larger Middle Eastern community…but what’s not widely known is that a large percentage of Iraqi refugees are victims of torture.
