Macomb County’s budget fix could mean layoffs and cuts in service. Macomb County is facing a $33million budget deficit.
In an effort to balance the budget, the county could eliminate up to 430 jobs. County Commissioner Phil DiMaria says the board voted not to raise taxes or go to the voters for an increase. At the same time, he says the commission wants to save as many services and employees as possible while keeping all options open including concessions from the county’s employees.
“We don’t want to hurt our employees but the in same token we have to respond to the deficit that’s in front of us. It’s not body’s fault. The economy is what it is. So, we want to minimize the effect that it has on everybody meaning our employees to the people we serve.”
Among the other considerations for budget savings is shuttering the Martha T. Berry Hospital and Freedom Hill Park.
This week, the Macomb County Commission also voted to take a pay cut. The county estimated the 5% reduction to the members’ $34,000 base salary and other benefits will equal savings of up to $150,000 a year.
A final plan to balance the budget is due later this fall.
